ARTIST NOTES: Pen and wash. Artwork is taken from on site sketches and final photographs provided by a friend. I had visited this magnificent Lion at the Tooronga Zoo in Sydney quite a few times, and always sketched him, he is really delightful. Although I had not painted him as such, but when a fellow artist showed me her photographs of him, they had captured that look - which I have captured in this painting. Just waiting for his dinner.

ARTIST BIO

Jan Lowe, AGRA

Artist Statement 2023

Jan is a realist/comtemporary artist, and her works are mainly of wildlife, and nature.  She has been a Scratchboard artist for well over 20 years, especially discovering the Ampersand products whilst workin the in the US, what a stunning product!  More recently her focus is Scratchboard but works with Watercolour on Clayboard.

Her passion is animals and nature, these subjects are ones she finds interesting and memorable.  With animals, she will investigate the dynamics of the subject, including the manipulation of its effects.  At times, rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination!  Her aim within her art is to tell a story and encourage creativity.  Such as, with an animal she believes you must know its personality, to create its vitality, emotion, passion and she uses that passion with all her subjects and records that moment.

Jan is a prize-winning artist, and has had many successes in the US, Canada, Australia, France, and Germany and she has been published in the US, Germany, France and England.  Jan is an invited judge in the US (Arizona).

Jan tutors in Scratchboard and Watercolour on Claybord.
